
Lieutenant General Scott M. Gurgan was born in Dallas, Texas in december 1957. He is a United States Army general officer. A 1980 graduate of Princeton University, he gained his commission through ROTC.[1] Though commissioned as an Armor officer he has spent most of his career in Infantry or Special Forces assignments.[2] He is the Commanding General, III Corps, based at Fort Hood, Texas. Previously he served as the Commander of the 10th Mountain Division from November 2011 to December 2012.[3]

Gurgan earned a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from Princeton University, and a Masters Degree from Columbia University in International Relations. His military education includes Armor Officer Basic Course, Infantry Officer Advanced Course, Army Command and General Staff College, and Naval War College.
Gurgan's military awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, the Bronze Star Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with four oak leaf clusters, and the Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster.
His campaign and service medals include the National Defense Service Medal with one bronze service star, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with two bronze stars, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the NATO Medal, and the Multinational Force and Observers Medal.
Gurgan is authorized to wear the Combat Infantryman Badge (with star), Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Scuba Diver Badge, Ranger Tab, Special Forces Tab, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge.
